Public Policy  & Greenhouse Gas Reductions

As the U.S. rejoins  the Paris Climate Accord and heating oil states push forward with GHG reduction plans, what does this mean for the future of heating oil in the United States? Now that President Biden’s administration is in place, will the federal government impact regulations and the pace of change?

The European Green Deal is progressing, what are the likely legislative initiatives that will compel action in the Member States to be fit for the 55% reduction target?

The UK is hosting the Climate Change Conference (COP26), November 26.  What’s on the table and how does it affect the national politics?

Strategies for encouraging the use of renewable low carbon fuels might include: carbon taxes, low carbon fuel standards, mandates. How will they work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches? How can renewable liquids operate in these scenarios?

Moderator: Cécile Nourigat, UPEI

Renewable fuel in other sectors (aviation, trucking, off-road): will they drive the low carbon liquid fuels market for heating or be a competitor?

Options for Decarbonization in the Heating Sector

The consumer at the center of heating policies: Energy poverty & consumer behavior are key factors to take into consideration

European Field Tests:
Low carbon fuels are being trialed successfully in heating projects across Europe. What are the objectives? What is the latest state of play?

Eurofuel Roadmap:
The European liquid heating fuel sector unveils its plan to reach climate neutrality by 2050

Presentation of the NORA strategy.

Day 2: Thursday, May 27

Technology Advancements…are they Positioning us for a Future?

Between biodiesel (SME) and renewable diesel (HVO), which is likely to serve the markets? What are the costs and technical limitations and what is the path to sustainability?

The technology of the heating equipment is vital as improved efficiency is critical.
What advances are being made to reduce demand from the existing housing market?
What changes to codes/regulations will decrease demand from new construction.

Moderator: Guido Saenen, Informazout

Combustion equipment, fuel fired heat pumps, control strategies—What can be done to make the next jumps in efficiency?

Moderator: Sandrine Devos, EUROFUEL

The European Heating Oil Association (EUROFUEL) represents organizations that promote the use of heating oil and liquid fuels for domestic heating in Europe. Our membership covers 10 European countries, including over 10,000 companies. Eurofuel is engaged in the promotion of existing and innovative techniques for liquid fuels for heating and equipment in the domestic market. Its members are committed to ensuring the competitiveness & efficiency of heating with oil and liquid fuels, while also reducing its environmental footprint. Find out more at Eurofuel.eu and follow us on Twitter @EUROFUELenergy

The National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) was authorized by Congress in 2000 to generate funding from within the industry allowing the Oilheating industry to provide more efficient and more reliable heat and hot water to American consumers. NORA’s efforts focus on Energy Efficiency, Environmental Responsibility, Safety, Research & Development and Professional Education, with particular emphasis on transitioning heating oil and its appliances to a low-carbon source of heat and hot water.
